Choosing a Flower Girl and Picking a Flower Girl Dress
April 8th, 2011 by Mondo Humboldt
Picking a flower girl is a great way to show a little girl in your life how special she is to you. The flower girl usually makes an appearance after the maid of honor has walked down the aisle. Her presence signals the bride’s arrival as she prepares the path for the bride by sprinkling flower petals along the aisle. She is usually dressed in white, and looks similar to a miniature version of the bride. One of the fun parts of planning a wedding for the bride is choosing one out of the many flower girl dresses for the little girl to wear that compliments the brides dress and/or the colors the bride has picked for the wedding. Some might be surprised at how much preparation and planning needs to happen in order to get the little flower girl ready for her moment in the big day.
The age range of a flower girl should span from 3-8. Usually a bride will pick from the family members, like nieces or cousins, however it is perfectly fine to pick the daughter of a close friend. For some brides the choice is easy. Any little one has the ability to be adorable, which is sure to put a smile on the guest’s faces. No matter how adorable they are, a small child is very likely to act out during the ceremony. The best way to avoid flower girl malfunction is to prepare with her in advance. A fun way to do this is to grab a picture book that discusses her role as a flower girl and go through it with her.
The bride should designate one of the bridesmaids to keep an eye on the flower girl and hold her hand if needed. If she starts fidgeting or misbehaving, the bridesmaid should bring the flower girl to her parent’s pew, where she should sit for the duration. Seat her parents on the aisle, near the front so that she can see them when she walks down the aisle and during the ceremony itself. Also, make sure she uses the restroom before the ceremony. Most of all don’t be too nervous that she will make a mistake. If she dumps all her petals at the start of the aisle, runs instead of walks, or even starts to cry, guests will think it’s cute.
If you have a special young girl in your life that you’ve had in mind, who might be just a little too old to be a flower girl, just find another position for her. She can be a junior bridesmaid or a reader. There is nothing written in stone that says you even have to have a flower girl at all if you prefer. However, the flower girl does make a nice addition in your wedding photos. It is also a cute part of the wedding when the little one is announced by the D.J. at the reception. How cute would it be for her to take part in the first dance? The wedding ceremony and reception afterward can prove to be a long day for any little one. Don’t be offended if her parents take her home early. Also, think about proving a babysitting service for guests with young ones. This will be a great way for the kids to play and for the adults to be able to enjoy themselves.
The bride usually dresses the flower girl in white as a symbol of purity. The dress can be a small age appropriate replica of what the bride is wearing or is can be just a simple white dress with a sash that matches the wedding colors. Sometimes the bride may even pick a non white dress that matches the color of her bridesmaid dresses. Luckily a little girl of making almost anything age appropriate look cute. However, bride should make sure the dress is not too long and is comfortable to eliminate the possibilities of tripping or fidgeting. Accent the dress with some cute and simple jewelry and you’ve got the cutest flower girl in your town. No matter what you chose for her to wear, the flower girl is always a big hit at weddings. Including her in your wedding will give her a special day to remember almost as much as you do!
