The Japanese call this furoshiki and has made an art out of how they wrap gifts today.
Small gifts only require small swatches of material such as a handkerchief. You can embroider initials on the hanky to personalize it or leave it plain. It creates a gift that can be used along with the wrap it came it. Larger gifts may require larger pieces of fabric to wrap them and requires a little more effort and thought.
Wedding gifts would be beautiful wrapped in tulle or a lacy curtain. If your gift is bed sheets, you could wrap them in matching curtains. This would give the receiver the opportunity to use them in the same room as the sheets. Bathroom gifts are the perfect gift when wrapped in a hand towel or bath towel. Almost any gift is more personal when wrapped in cloth and it is easy to do too.
If you have a large piece of fabric and small items you are trying to wrap, cut the fabric in small squares. Place the gift in the center and begin lifting the corners to create a pocket. You can tuck in the shorter sides of the fabric or cut the fabric so you can pick up each side as well as the corners. Ribbon may be used to secure the top of the bundle.
There are virtually hundreds of ideas for the use of old cloth. The greatest is to wrap gifts in. If you do not have any spare material around you can purchase some at a thrift store in your area. It makes receiving gifts more exciting and giving them more fun. When a gift is wrapped in fabric, the wrap is more likely to be used again.
