Styles Of Men’s Shirts : The Basics Explained

July 31st, 2010 by Mark Walters

Most men have at least a few dress shirts tucked away in their closets, and they usually come in one of three styles:

Athletic Fit - This style of shirt is generally suited to men with a slimmer build, it is a shirt that is tapered much more dramatically than the modern fit. the athletic fit shirt is a staple of designer brands such as Calvin Klein and Hugo Boss and is typically carried by retail clothing sellers such as Superdry. These shirts are suited for going out to a club or bar, but they also work as a sharp business shirt for thinner men. A modern or classic fit shirt may look too baggy on a thin man, and so athletic fit can be substituted. It can really give your outfit an urban edge and suits modern aesthetics quite well.

Modern Fit - The modern fit describes a shirt that is semi-fitted, possessing a somewhat tapered look. This look has been around in some form or another for many years, but the technical “modern fit” is a relatively new addition to men’s fashion. Most guys with an average build or a slight variant thereof will look impressive in this style of shirt and it is ideal for virtually any occasion. Whether out on the town for a romantic date night, dressing up for a formal event, or heading to the office, the modern fit dress shirt will deliver the perfect look.

Classic Fit - This is the most commonplace style of men’s shirt you can find. It rarely has any taper to it and is much roomier, making it perfect for men with average to large builds. Most department stores and clothing retail outlets sell these, though they are starting to diminish in popularity as the modern fit becomes more popular. The classic fit used to be the shirt of menswear outlets and designer brands, but you can find it even at discount departments stores and the like these days. However, the look is still “classic”, and it works well for men who are larger or taller or just want to maintain a more formal business look.

If you are having a tough time deciding which style of shirt looks best on you, then go with the classic fit, which looks good on any body type. Do not be afraid to try on one of the other styles though - it is always good to experiment and you may find out that they suit you better.
