If you are contemplating purchasing a diamond ring, the most critical element in your decision, is the cut of the diamond. Essentially, the only way to determine which of two identically priced diamonds is the best bargain is to know the rating of each stone’s cut. The ability of a diamond to reflect and refract light, making it sparkle, is determined by the precision of every cut in the diamond.
A poorly cut diamond, which is one cut too deeply or too shallow, will allow light to escape through the opposite side or through the bottom of the diamond before it can reflect the light back to the surface. A diamond that is well-cut, which is one with the correct number of facets and precision angles in good proportions, will allow light to bounce off all if its sides without losing any of it, before finally reflecting it back through its top.
When people talk about something having a ‘good’ color, they normally think about bold, and vivid ones, but this is not true with diamond rings. With diamond rings, it is the colorless stones that are the most valuable and the least common. For a more reasonably priced diamond ring, you may choose the yellow ones which are more prevalent.
The clarity, or inner characteristics of a diamond, can only be established with a jeweler’s microscope. Flaws within a diamond and known as inclusions include specks, ripples and indentations. High quality cut and color can offset slight imperfections making it appear just as lovely as a flawless diamond although the diamond with the least number of imperfections has the highest value.
Diamonds weighing under a carat are defined by “points”, with one carat (the unit of measure of weight for diamonds) being equal to 100 points. When determining price, a single stone of one carat is far more expensive that several stones with a combined weight of one carat. Knowing the ‘per carat cost’ of a diamond will allow you to know the actual diamond price, however, it is important to bear in mind that that even though large diamonds with a high carat weight are impressive in size. The clarity, cut, and color of a diamond will have to be analyzed in order to determine a diamond’s actual value, with a large carat weight being of secondary concern.
