5 Tips for the Best Man Wedding Toast

October 29th, 2009 by Keith Johnson

Let’s jump right to it; in this post you will get 5 golden tips to write the ultimate Best Man Wedding Toast, that everyone will remember and talk about for a long time. These tips will hopefully give you a good idea about how to write your wedding speech and what to include, so you make the bride, groom and all the guests happy at the wedding.

Tip 1: The beginning

It is very important that you begin by introducing before you start on the actual toast. Many people might not know you, if you are attending a big wedding, so it will be good to, shortly and precise, tell everybody who you are and how you know the groom and maybe also the bride.

Tip 2: Use humor - but take care

Remember to put in a few jokes in your speech. The best toast contains a funny story about the groom, but be careful with this. You don’t want to humiliate or embarrass anyone at the wedding, and especially not humiliate anyone. The “It’s funny because it’s true”-saying doesn’t always work in a speech, but use it carefully and you will be fine.

Tip 3: Be nice to the bride

It always works to say something nice about the bride; put in a compliment, but don’t be too “flirty”. If it seems like you are hitting on the bride, it will ruin your speech.

Tip 4: Be the groom’s spokesperson

Make sure that you don’t embarrass the groom. Many people will judge the groom on the behavior of the best man, so don’t get too drunk or say stupid things. The toast will get much better, if you remember you are speaking for the groom.

Tip 5: Tell a good story

The best tip of the all: be nostalgic. Tell a story that moves people, maybe a funny story of you and the groom, or a story from the childhood of the bridegroom. Remember that the story has to be funny and cozy, so that people can relate to it. State how long you have known the groom and maybe tell a story from the beginning of the newly-weds relationship.
