One thing that all trend-setters and fashionistas around the world, to say nothing of the best designers, understand is that while fashion changes with the seasons, style is a timeless trait. A huge mistake that women make is assuming that the present season is what needs to be focused on when choosing clothing. Instead of trying too hard to get your must-haves for this season, dressing well can be more about focusing on the elements of style. Specifically, timeless style, the sort of staples of fashion that outlast the trends year after year.
It’s not about the money. So you don’t have a walk-in closet and a disposable income of five figures to spend each time the season changes. That doesn’t mean you need to be running around in a burlap sack, honey. Regardless of your budget, it’s possible to find clothes that are stylish anywhere and everywhere. From thrift stores to designer stores, there’s always at least one garment in your size that’s classy, timeless, and chic. Learn to hunt for those pieces, and you’re pretty much promised a look that’s stylish.
One of the most important things you can do for yourself as a woman is stop focusing on the fact that you might not think fashion is fair. Yes, it’s tough to live in a world where anyone over a size six is considered plus size, but that’s not going to get a cuter pair of jeans on you any faster. A whole lot of beautiful women who weigh more than 100 pounds manage to find ways to dress well, not just get by. Don’t let the sizes psych you out of being stylish, and don’t get discouraged about shopping to find something right for you. It can be done, and you will do it.
Don’t let yourself go. So you’re single, or working from home, or staying at home with the kids. Sure, you can sit there all day in yoga pants and eat Cheetos, but eventually, it’s going to catch up with you and you’re going to start to feel ugly. Even if you’re not attending a black tie gala, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put a little thought into what you wear each day. Style and fashion are just as much about how you feel as how you actually look, so make sure that you choose clothes that make you feel great every day, not just on special occasions.
All it takes are a few good buys. You don’t have to break the bank on an entirely new wardrobe for spring, fall, winter, and summer. If you spend a little bit on a few basic items, your style will stretch and stretch and stretch. Never underestimate the power of a well-cut black dress, nice pair of black pants, one dress shirt, and a cashmere cardigan. For a woman, these four basics make designing other outfits easy. If you spend a little more on these, then you can throw on a less expensive accessory and still look incredibly well-coiffed. Having great basics also makes it easier to change things up with a single pair of shoes or a great bag.
Shoes are usually the key. If you’re feeling just okay in a dress, the shoes you choose can make it or break it. Knowing that, it’s important to have shoes that you could wear with a semi-formal and formal outfit alike that will make you feel invigorated and sexy. Shoes more than anything also affect your walk, so choose wisely so you’re out there with confidence on big days.
More than anything else, take this advice and figure out how to apply it to yourself and your own fashion. While reading tips in a magazine or getting advice from a trusted friend is great, the most important voice you have when it comes to your own look is yourself. Only you know what’s right, or what’s going to make you feel confident and powerful. Even with basic elements of style, what really brings someone’s aesthetic all together is their own sense of self, so don’t get rid of yourself when looking for a good outfit or look. It’s important to find a way to be stylish while still being yourself, as the people who turn the most heads manage to stay unique.
Real style is finding a way to express your personality and flatter your body type all at the same time.
