August 30th, 2009 by Wendy Racklave

Gemstones are very much valued especially by women. During special occasions, jewellery made of a particular type of gemstone are the ones that will complete the elegant outfit of anyone in a significant gathering. What makes a piece of jewelry much more interesting is the fascinating information behind every gemstone that comes with a piece of jewelry.

Over the years, gemstones have also been called precious or semi-precious stones. They are taken or mined from the bottom of the Earth and after that, they would undergo specific treatment. After giving the gem the final cut, it is now ready to be sold out.

The value of gemstones is measured according to their various features and treatment procedure. Moreover, each gem is determined by their chemical composition and is also grouped according to their specie. Quartz and beryl are among the typical species of gems.

Gemstones are admired because of their color, cut, clarity, and carat. A gem that is made of high quality is expected to be expensive as well. Diamond’s price for instance depends on the cut that it has. Aside from this, not all kinds of gems are easy to find. Some of them are very rare to find and so rarity also determines the worth of a gem.

A gem will automatically undergo treatment procedures before shaping it and making them into lovely jewellery. It will undergo heat and radiation. Some also need to undergo waxing or oiling and fracture filing. After these, a gem with enhanced color and with star-like effect (called asteria) is now ready to please any naked eyes.

Some of the known gemstones are listed below:

Amethyst

It belongs to the quartz specie. Its color could vary from the different shades of purple and is regarded as a stone for the royalties. Amethyst is also believed to help you manage or overcome certain sicknesses and symptoms namely headache and insomnia.

Aquamarine

This stone belongs to the specie of beryl. The color of aquamarine is usually blue or green. This is also the birthstone of the people born in the month of March. Among the lucky countries where this gem could be mined are Sri Lanka, Zambia, and Afghanistan.

Garnet

From the Latin word which means pomegranate, garnet got its name. This is because pomegranate is a bush that can bear red fruit and garnet has a beautiful red color. It is believed that it can help in the healing process of blood disorders during the ancient times.

The number of gemstones is not only limited to the number of birthstones we know. There are still other precious stones out there and gemologists would continue to identify and enhance them.
