Ladies Royal Ascot-What Do You Wear?

April 28th, 2009 by David Oneil

Ladies Royal Ascot has to be one of the most famous racing days around the world. It really is the highlight of the event and in some ways rather overshadows the rest of the proceedings. Thousands upon thousands of spectators attend the Gold Cup which is held amongst some of the most outrageous hats ever seen!!

It must, however, be remembered that even in the very early days of racing at ascot there were displays of “high fashion”. The race goers normally consisted of the higher English Nobles and not only dressed accordingly but also dined on banquets fit for a “king”. Even then the racing was a sumptuous occasion.

It is not that easy to exactly pinpoint when the third day of the races became “Ladies Royal Ascot” or Ladies Day. History seems to point to the fact that the third day of the races became the most popular one, especially with females, who then brought with them the fashion and hats.

Over the course of time Ladies Day became firmly embedded in the Royal Ascot lineup and a dress code was laid out. Gentleman were required to wear full morning suits and the ladies had to be suitably attired in clothes that did not show their midriff or bare shoulders.

The latest fashions are now very prominent at Ladies Royal Ascot and at 2.00pm the Royal Family proceed over the turf at Ascot in an open carriage. The competition is now quite fierce for the “best hat” and the day is a venue for all the latest fashion.

The Queens attire is obviously relatively formal, however, this really is not the case with other race-goers. Ladies get round the dress restrictions placed upon them by “donning” the most interesting and sometimes outrageous hats.

One of the most famous hatmakers is Herbert Johnson Ltd of London. They have been established for over two hundred years and during this time have made hats for Kings,Queens,Tsars and Princess Diana. Their hats, obviously, are of a very high quality, and some are extremely unusual. You can expect to pay anywhere from 300 pounds upwards.

On a different note always check the weather forecast. British summers are not well known for being particularly warm or dry! If you are a lady attending the event make sure your footwear is suitable especially if the ground is soft…
