March 29th, 2009 by Mick Walker

The music business cycles thus allowing what was once considered old to be valued as new and exciting again. There are a number of things that can trigger a resurgence of particular kinds of music. The fans of the reemerging music are sure to take advantage of the chance to show their pride in their favorite music. They will certainly bring out their old t-shirts featuring their favorite bands.

Initially it appeared that hip hop would remain the favorite genre for the coming generations; yet beneath the rhymes and beats was the sound of vintage groups, which hip hop stylists sampled and integrated. Young folks hearing hip hop music were for a long while clueless that they were really hearing riffs by Aerosmith or samples of Journey tunes. That is, until the launch of video games like Guitar Hero.

Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and all of those interactive music video games relied on the vintage music of classic rock to be their soundtrack and suddenly kids had a name to put to those samples they had been hearing and they were exposed to a whole new vein of music called classic rock and they took to it immediately.

It didn’t take too long for video game makers to begin providing additional music for kids to purchase for their Guitar Hero catalog, primarily classic rock tunes. Seeing this, parents dug out their vintage rock t-shirts to wear again since their own kids were getting into classic rock the same way they did years back. Young people saw their parents sporting vintage rock t-shirts, as well as those depicted in Guitar Hero games, and they wanted them also.

It usually happens that when a band releases a new record their t-shirts start selling and their back catalog of music starts selling again as well. Imagine taking that concept and multiplying by the number of classic rock bands available and you suddenly have a resurgence in the sale of vintage rock t-shirts. These video games were like the re-issue of all of that guitar based classic rock and suddenly t-shirts and CDs started selling again like crazy.

It can be said that when the younger generation starts rediscovering portions of their parents’ past then some of the things that the parents held dear start to make a comeback. Guitar Hero has effectively brought back classic rock and now kids are wearing vintage rock t-shirts of bands that existed 20 or 30 years ago. The kids are buying the music but they are also rediscovering vinyl records and now vinyl records are making a comeback as well.

Who could have forecast that the identical thing parents griped about for years is the means of bringing their memories of youth to their own children. For a long time parents believed that video games were destroying their kid’s generation, but with video games revitalizing interest in classic rock and vintage rock t-shirts, many are reconsidering this opinion.

Hip hop probably won’t be disappearing from the music industry, but it is kind of funny to see the former DMX t-shirt kids listening to classic rock and sporting vintage rock t-shirts. Guitar Hero and similar games are just one example of how iconic bands and singers of previous generations can reemerge in a new, trendy outlet of current generations. It’s hard to say how, but undoubtedly someone will ensure that vintage classic rock t-shirts will make a surge among the youth of the world again.
